It is with deepest regret that we announce the recent passing of legendary New Yorker, Billy The Artist (William Miller).

Billy was “Pura Vida” whose art adorned products worldwide from Swatch to Nescafé. His first big gig was to paint panels for the broadway stage of RENT that captured the energy and vibrancy of the East Village, the place he called home for the last 30 years. Collector Steve Cohen recently purchased one of his famous cows and musician John Baptiste enjoyed playing his custom piano. His entire life was dedicated to art.

Billy had created several books in the past two years, most recently last month with “East Village Closed” — a photo illustrative experience of life in the East Village during the pandemic as seen through Billy’s eyes. Billy loved the East Village, where he found the love and inspiration for his work. He will be missed.

Rest In Peace.

CowParade

The CowParade became famous in the city in 2000. The CowParade public art event during the summer of that year, culminated in a live auction that raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for New York City non-profits including God’s Love We Deliver.

The Mayor’s Office estimated that some 45 million people came to see the cows during the three months of the exhibit. Since its inception in 1999, the CowParade has gone on to stage another 90+ public art exhibits in 34 countries with more than 6,000 life size fiberglass cows painted and imaginatively transformed by many thousands of global artists and sculptors. God’s Love is thrilled to be staging the 100th global CowParade event this August.

Record breaking 8th cow worldwide for Billy the Artist

Billy the Artist was personally chosen by the Cohen’s (Mets owners) to paint two cows for their two charity foundations. The cows will be on display at the Hudson Yards, NYC starting August 18th. Billy the Artist was the main artist for the original New York CowParade 21 years ago.

Cows will be looking to keep the city moo-ving come August during the return of the famed CowParade.

The public art event dates back to 2000, when a three-month display of ceramic cows helped bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars for New York City non-profits like God’s Love We Deliver, this year’s primary sponsor.

Colorful cows will be on view from August through September at Industry City, where 75 different artists from around the world are currently putting the finishing touches on their not-so-livestock. At the end, the carefully curated cows are put out to pasture — and sold by auction to the highest bidder.

Though CowParade began in New York, organizers say they’ve gone on to stage another 90-plus public art exhibits in 34 countries worldwide. To date, more than 6,000 life-size fiberglass cows have been transformed by countless creators, and this summer marks CowParade’s 100th international event.

Billy The Artist (BTA) is never without his sketchpad, which aided him with his latest project — a book of illustrations with snippets of conversation titled “Things You Don’t Hear Twice: Quotes From the East Village.”

Billy The Artist’ favorite neighborhood haunts – International Bar on First Avenue in New York City – was the location of his book signing session.

In a recent exchange with EV Grieve – an East Village Blog – he shared a little about the book and his thoughts on the East Village.

Billy The Artist: “I’ve lived in the East Village for 30 years and have always loved the vibe and people here … I almost always have my sketchpad on me and would draw in my various East Village bars and, of course, hear the craziest quotes from my friends or strangers. I would write down the quotes in the back of my sketchpad and that’s how this book became a reality.

Living and working in my studio in the East Village I need to get out and be with people — be it in the afternoon or night. As I’ve gotten older, I tend to like the daytime in a bar because it [attracts] more regulars.

This book has been in the making for a long time, and both the quotes and illustrations I hope remind everyone how great the East Village was and still is.”

Billy The Artist creates a colorful mural for New York City restaurant Avena and saves it from a view of construction.

Restaurant in need

New restaurant Avena along 6th Avenue north of Houston Street in New York City’s West Village opened its doors this March (2019). Three weeks later, construction began to expand the plaza in front of the block. The construction surrounds work on a tiny new $1.49 million park called Little Red Square, which has been delayed several times since the Parks Department first announced a May 2017 completion date back in 2014. The current target date is winter of 2020. Due to this construction, diners at Avena were left with a view of a pair of chain-link fences.

Owners were worried the project, which is set to be complete in March of 2020, would negatively impact business. With help of an architect and internationally renowned live painter and muralist Billy The Artist (BTA) – they created a mobile mural that was recently put up along the sidewalk near the cafe tables.

Mural

To beautify customers’ views, the owners of restaurant Avena tapped East Village-based muralist Billy The Artist to paint a bright, graffiti-like screen. The 18-foot long work was mounted on the fence on Tuesday. The mural boasts BTA’s signature colorful abstract creations. The mural has attracted quite the attention with both customers and local community.
