Artist Alexa Meade, famous for her play on perspective, will have her artwork orbiting Earth for three days.

September 15, 8:02pm EDT – September 18, 2021
The SpaceX Inspiration4 rocket launch is the world’s first all-civilian mission to orbit the Earth. Included onboard the spaceship is a digital art exhibition, featuring NFTs made by artists and astronauts alike. Alexa Meade’s video art piece, Aura, will make history by being among the first works of art exhibited in space.

An online auction will coincide with the rocket’s journey, with bidding kicking off when the rocket launches and closing as the rocket splashes down into the Atlantic Ocean. All proceeds will benefit the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Alexa Meade is a mixed-media painter and installation artist, best known for her portraits painted on the human body and set against painted backgrounds, that turn real life people into seemingly 2D works of art.

She takes a classical concept — trompe l’oeil, the art of making a two-dimensional representation look three-dimensional—and works in an opposite direction. The Passing Zone: When John F. Kennedy said, “We choose to go to the moon in this decade, and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard,” he was talking about space exploration. However, that is the mindset of jugglers. We search for the difficult, and set out to master it. “People-Juggling” is a good example of an idea that was big, crazy, unlikely, and different than what other performers were doing. We decided, “we want to juggle people,” and then we chose to accomplish that.

They continue: “Aspire to do the difficult. Embrace it. Search it out, and tackle it. Do something no one has done. Set your sights on something seemingly impossible. It will be the thing that sets you apart from the rest. Is it difficult? Good. Then probably nobody else will bother to do it. You be the one to do it. And we promise, you will stand out.”

Jon Wee and Owen Morse: “It is the ultimate story of risk, dreams, science, and accomplishment. But after you’ve spent hours reliving that event, use the inspiration to set your sights on your own moon landing. Set a crazy goal, maybe one that only you believe in. Then do it. Because it is hard.”

Continuing: “Once we decided that juggling people was our goal, it took us four years to accomplish it. There were experiments, failures, various premises and versions, starts and re-starts. Many thousands of dollars were spent on equipment, consultants, plans, riggers, and eventually a free-standing rig that we could set up anywhere, to perform this piece. Friends volunteered as test subjects. It is the most time and money we have spent, and the hardest we’ve worked, and we are pleased that it finally paid off!”

What can you say about a man who has done it all? He’s hiked the Denali glacier, trekked to the Ebola hot zone of Western Africa, done an aerial interview with John Glenn while piloting a small plane, toured the damaged reactors of Fukushima, anchored a CNN morning show, and trained with NASA to become the first reporter in space.

No, this isn’t a Dos Equis’ commercial for The Most Interesting Man in the World, this is the real life dedication to science, technology and aerospace journalism that Miles O’Brien lives every day.

For thirty years, Americans have tuned in to watch, learn and be amazed by the most important and interesting stories happening in science today told with the insight, honesty and humor that only Miles brings to his work.

For nearly seventeen of those years, Miles was a staff correspondent for CNN and the anchor of various programs, including American Morning. After CNN, he started MOBProd as an independent way to pursue science storytelling. He became the science correspondent for the PBS NewsHour and began to grow the MOBProd team.

Since then he’s produced and directed independent science documentaries for NOVA, been a correspondent for PBS documentary series FRONTLINE and produced the Science Nation series for the National Science Foundation. And, not surprisingly, he’s picked up a few awards along the way including several Emmys, a Peabody, and a DuPont for his coverage of Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath.

While on assignment in 2014, a heavy equipment case fell on Miles’s forearm. He developed acute compartment syndrome, which necessitated the emergency amputation of his left arm above the elbow. But if you think that’s slowed him down, you’d be sorely mistaken.

Not only has his reporting and producing continued to grow steadily, he’s taken on new physical challenges completing numerous “century rides” on his bicycle, running two marathons, and recently finishing a triathlon.

Still, it’s safe to say that whatever Miles is doing, he’d rather be flying. An avid aviator, he’s logged over 2,500 hours of flight time and looks forward to returning to the skies on his own soon.
